An IoT based system for remote patient monitoring

Abstract:
Following a surgical procedure, patients are monitored in an ICU until physically stable, after which are discharged to a ward for further evaluation and recovery. Usually, ward evaluation does not imply continuous physiological parameters monitoring and therefore patient relapse is not uncommon. The present paper describes the steps taken to design and build a low-cost modular monitoring system prototype. This system aims to offer mobile support in order to facilitate faster and better medical interventions in emergency cases and has been developed using low-power dedicated sensor arrays for EKG, SpO2, temperature and movement. The interfaces for these sensors have been developed according to the IoT model: a central control unit exposes a RESTful based Web interface that ensures a platform agnostic behaviour and provides a flexible mechanism to integrate new components.

An IOT by information retrieval approach: Smart lights controlled using WiFi

Abstract:
In recent years, the rapid development of Internet of Technology (IOT) makes the intelligent home come true as people expect. The intelligent home system creates the more comfortable, safer, humane and intelligent living environment. It can resolve the problems facing by the people who have busy schedules and get a very less amount of time to spend at home which is increasing rapidly around the world. For the solution of this problem, user can depend on the automated machines and gadgets like smart phones. These smart gadgets are using cloud computing which sends and receives signal o the cloud. The data that is of our use can be fetched by matching some key values using the concept of information retrieval. The key objective of this paper is to create a full-fledged application which could let user to operate the lights of their house from any remote location. The user have a list of options to select which light is to be on and when. The only requirement is to have working wifi at home to which the lights are connected. The is developed in Lua Language by using the Esplorer Integrated Development Environment (IDE). We have also used the micro controller chip ESP 8266 to build our board.

Integration of Smart Phone and IOT for development of smart public transportation system

Abstract:
As population is burgeoning, there is an increase in the number of vehicles on the road and hence an upsurge in the problems associated with traffic management, especially the Public Transport. There is also an increase in the number of accidents and various other traffic related issues. Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) provides the solution to most of these problems by integrating existing technologies with the underlying infrastructure. With the advent of mobile technology and the ubiquitous cellular network, real time vehicle tracking for efficient transport management has become viable. The futile long wait for a bus to arrive can be avoided by Intelligent Public Transportation System. The omnipresence of Smart Phones and their ever increasing power at a very economical price makes them one of the most attractive options for developing IOT applications. Here, an approach based on the combination of technologies like GPS and Android is discussed which can assuage passengers who commute by the means of public transport. The user is furnished with explicit information about the current location of nearest buses approaching the bus-stop on a mobile application. Using readily available Android API's, technologies like 3G network and SMS based services in the existing mobile phones can reduce the cost and size of hardware required, as well as lead to a better output.

IoT based Smart Home design using power and security management

Abstract:
The paper presents the design and implementation of an Ethernet-based Smart Home intelligent system for monitoring the electrical energy consumption based upon the real time tracking of the devices at home an INTEL GALILEO 2ND generation development board, which can be used in homes and societies. The proposed system works on real time monitoring and voice control, so that the electrical devices and switches can be remotely controlled and monitored with or without an android based app. It uses various sensors to not only monitor the real time device tracking but also maintaining the security of your house. It is monitored and controlled remotely from an android app using the Internet or the Intranet connectivity. The proposed outcome of the project aims as multiple benefits of saving on electricity bills of the home as well as keep the users updated about their home security with an option of controlling the switching of the devices by using their voice or simple toggle touch on their smartphone, and last but most importantly, monitor the usage in order to conserve the precious natural resources by reducing electrical energy consumption.

An IoT based smart solar photovoltaic remote monitoring and control unit

Abstract:
Using the Internet Of Things Technology for supervising solar photovoltaic power generation can greatly enhance the performance, monitoring and maintenance of the plant. With advancement of technologies the cost of renewable energy equipments is going down globally encouraging large scale solar photovoltaic installations. This massive scale of solar photovoltaic deployment requires sophisticated systems for automation of the plant monitoring remotely using web based interfaces as majority of them are installed in inaccessible locations and thus unable to be monitored from a dedicated location. The discussion in this paper is based on implementation of new cost effective methodology based on IoT to remotely monitor a solar photovoltaic plant for performance evaluation. This will facilitate preventive maintenance, fault detection, historical analysis of the plant in addition to real time monitoring.

A smart IoT system for monitoring solar PV power conditioning unit

Abstract:
In this paper, we have described an effective implementation of an intelligent remote monitoring system for solar Photovoltaic (PV) Power Conditioning Unit (PCU) which is used in a greenhouse environment. The proposed system design can be installed in solar PV PCU in order to solve management problems, maintenance and shortens the mean time to repair. We have designed a smart remote monitoring system based on internet of thing for monitoring Solar PV PCU. This system had incorporated remote monitoring for solar PV PCU through internet using host, network GPRS (Global Positioning Radio Service), embedded system gateway and other components. The result of our demonstration shows that the system can monitor store and manipulate data from solar PV PCU. Thus, the remote monitoring functions are realized in real-time.

IoT smart parking system for reducing green house gas emission

Abstract:
Rapid climate change results natural calamity and severe economic impact and threats to the life. Burning fossil fuels by the medium of transportation contributes 1/3 of portion in increasing greenhouse emission and leading to raise surface temperate. Commuters in and around the developed cities faces difficulties in finding parking lot due to lack of notification process and autonomous parking systems. This causes commuters to take multiple rounds trips to get the parking slot which causes burning additional fuel and ultimately producing excessive CO2 emission. This paper describes solution to smart parking system using Internet of Things (IoT) to override parking hazards and explains how does it helps to minimize emitting greenhouse gases. IoT enables smart parking system using the system of interconnected Raspberry Pi, Distance Sensor, Pi Camera devices together. This hardware reacts to one another collects data and transmits to cloud storage.

IoT for remote elderly patient care based on Fuzzy logic

Abstract:
In this paper we propose an in-home healthcare monitoring system offering several uses. It helps the elderly person to complete the activities independently in their own lives and at the same time facilitates family members and care provider to track inhabitants. The main idea is to have several sensors that can be used at home and enables full and tightly controlled elderly patient care. Each modality is processed and analyzed by specific algorithms. A data approach based on fuzzy logic with a set of rules directed by medical recommendations.

Priority based and secured traffic management system for emergency vehicle using IoT

Abstract:
Intelligent Traffic System (ITS) is one of the most recent research topics in the Internet of Things (IoT). The ever increasing number of vehicles in modern cities is creating heavy traffic congestion. To reduce the traffic congestion, a number of research have already been done to provide a clear pathway to the emergency vehicles in the urban area. However, they often fail to meet the target travel time of an emergency vehicle set by the Department of Treasury and Finances Budget and Financial Management Guidance (BFMG). To address this issue directly, an innovative ITS system considering the priorities of emergency vehicles based on the type of an incident and a method for detecting and responding to the hacking of traffic signals have been proposed in this paper. An experiment using a simulation software, namely Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO) was conducted. The simulation results have exhibited superior performance of our proposed system over the currently operational and recently proposed ITS for emergency vehicles, in terms of both congestion avoidance and travel time. The response time attained by our scheme meets the target set by BFMG for both normal and hacked traffic signals.

Earthquake early warning system by IOT using Wireless sensor networks

Abstract:
The Wireless sensor network (WSN) is spatially distributed sensors in an autonomous manner to monitor physical environmental conditions. The Internet of things (IOT) is the network of computed physical objects which enables these things to connect, collect and exchange data. In this paper, we propose an earthquake early warning system by means of an IOT in WSN. The sensors are placed in the surface of the earth. When an earthquake occurs, both compression P wave and transverse S wave radiates outward the epicenter of the earth. The P wave, which travels fastest, trips the sensors, placed in the landscape. It causes early alert signals to be transfer ahead, giving humans and automated electronic system a warning to take precautionary actions. So that before the damage begins with the arrival of the slower but stronger S waves, the public are warned earlier. The signal from each sensor which senses the P wave and which has Zigbee transmitter transfers the alert signal to the gateway. The gateway which has the Zigbee receiver and acts as an IOT transfers the warning to smart phones. Thus early alert message is received by the people in terms of location, time and other parameters. Eventually, many of the human lives can be saved. The software used here is LABVIEW where the three angle axis of the sensor can be sensed and detected when the sensors are interfaced with this software.

Low cost IoT for laboratory environment

Abstract:
Internet of Things (IoT) has given an opportunity to build powerful laboratory environment using wireless technology, LAN technology and sensor devices. This works aims to establish a basic prototype design of a simple and expandable IoT to be used in an intelligent laboratory. The reading of various sensors from multiple labs is directly uploaded to the server storage on cloud from where other collaborating laboratories can read, analyze, and store the data either by humans or machines. The fundamental aspect of proposed work is to provide necessary infrastructure to enable the data collection and dissemination to all stakeholders.

IoT-based dynamic street light control for smart cities use cases

Abstract:
This paper presents a real-world proven solution for dynamic street light control and management which relies on an open and flexible Internet of Things architecture. Substantial contribution is brought at the interoperability level using novel device connection concept based on model-driven communication agents to speed up the integration of sensors and actuators to Internet of Things platforms. The paper shows also results from real-world tests with deployed dynamic street lights in urban spaces. The proposed dynamic light control solution permits an energy saving of about 56% compared to classical static, time-based street light control.

Device to device interaction analysis in IoT based Smart Traffic Management System

Abstract:
Device to Device Communication pattern is analyzed for IoT based Smart Traffic Management System in the paper. In this type of communication pattern there is no any human intervention in a system because of direct communication between the devices, hence it is completely automated. D2D Communication Patterns are in great demand in IoT sector where a Thing (Device) is controlled by Internet from any remote place by using another Device. Here in an experiment of Smart Traffic Management System the method to determine Traffic Density on a particular lane is discussed. Ultrasonic Sensors are employed as the data acquisition unit to collect the information regarding Traffic Density and Raspberry Pi is used as Control Unit for processing the data. The information regarding traffic density sensed is processed and transmitted to the users provided with Android Application, where the user get a notification about the traffic density in that particular lane and hence assist to take an alternate path.

Gesture based IoT light control for smart clothing

Abstract:
In this paper, a smart wireless wristband is proposed. The potential of innovative gesture based interactivity with connected lighting solutions is reviewed. The solution is intended to offer numerous benefits, in terms of ease of use, and enhanced dynamic interactive functionality. A comparative analysis will be carried out between this work and existing solutions. The evolution of lighting and gesture controls will be discussed and an overview of alternative applications will be provided, as part of the critical analysis.

Polluino: An efficient cloud-based management of IoT devices for air quality monitoring

Abstract:
The Internet of Things paradigm originates from the proliferation of intelligent devices that can sense, compute and communicate data streams in a ubiquitous information and communication network. The great amounts of data coming from these devices introduce some challenges related to the storage and processing capabilities of the information. This strengthens the novel paradigm known as Big Data. In such a complex scenario, the Cloud computing is an efficient solution for the managing of sensor data. This paper presents Polluino, a system for monitoring the air pollution via Arduino. Moreover, a Cloud-based platform that manages data coming from air quality sensors is developed.

IoT based classification of vital signs data for chronic disease monitoring

Nowadays chronic diseases are the leading cause of deaths in India. These diseases which include various ailments in the form of diabetes, stroke, cardiovascular diseases, mental health illness, cancers, and chronic lung diseases. Chronic diseases are the biggest challenge for India and these diseases are the main cause of hospitalization for elder people. People who have suffered from chronic diseases are needed to repeatedly monitor the vital signs periodically. The number of nurses in hospital is relative low compared to the number of patients in hospital, there may be a chance to miss to monitor any patient vital signs which may affect patient health. In this paper, real time monitoring vital signs of a patient is developed using wearable sensors. Without nurse help, patient know the vital signs from the sensors and the system stored the sensor value in the form of text document. By using data mining approaches, the system is trained for vital sign data. Patients give their text document to the system which in turn they know their health status without any nurse help. This system enables high risk patients to be timely checked and enhance the quality of a life of patients.

Abstract:
Internet Of Things (IoT)is a shared network of objects or things which can interact with each other provided the Internet connection. IoT plays an important role in agriculture industry which can feed 9.6 billion people on the Earth by 2050. Smart Agriculture helps to reduce wastage, effective usage of fertilizer and thereby increase the crop yield. In this work, a system is developed to monitor crop-field using sensors (soil moisture, temperature, humidity, Light) and automate the irrigation system. The data from sensors are sent to Web server database using wireless transmission. In server database the data are encoded in JSON format. The irrigation is automated if the moisture and temperature of the field falls below the brink. In greenhouses light intensity control can also be automated in addition to irrigation. The notifications are sent to farmers' mobile periodically. The farmers' can able to monitor the field conditions from anywhere. This system will be more useful in areas where water is in scarce. This system is 92% more efficient than the conventional approach.

A system architecture to control robot through the acquisition of sensory data in IoT environments

Abstract:
Sensory data should be converted into meaningful situational information so that context-aware system can provide various robot services for users on IoT environments. Context-aware system gathers sensor data from the natural environment, which is converted to sensory data and abstracted as situational data to provide robot services. On robot runtime environment, context-aware system is required to access information of robot devices, description of robot functions, and list of robot services, in order to control robot tasks. However, those two different systems should be loosely coupled. In order to adapt the abstract concept on robot runtime environments, the sensory data acquisition system is required. In this paper, we propose system architecture to control a robot based on the acquisition of sensory data. This architecture includes the sensor data conversion process to provide appropriate control information for robot tasks.

Smart parking: An IoT application for smart city

Abstract:
Smart parking can be regarded as a part of IoT application using wireless sensors nodes. The scope of this paper is to present a smart parking solution utilizing a min-max detection algorithm. Based on this algorithm, we performed an experiment using a smart parking area in a Smart City in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Numerical results presented, verify 98% accuracy of the algorithm based on the sample taken.

Abstract:
Major challenge in Agriculture is to cultivate produce in the farm and deliver it to the end consumers with the best possible price and best possible quality. Currently all over the world, it is found that around 50% for the farm produce never reach the end consumer due to wastage and suboptimal prices. Electricity measuring IoT device

Abstract:
As observed in the statistics, the electricity usage is increasing day by day. User comes to know about the electricity consumption of his house after a month. Till then he is not aware about it. After receiving the electricity bill user starts worrying. To reduce the wastage of energy and money as well as use the electricity efficiently, this device has been designed. The device notifies the user about his home electricity usages by sending alerts, suggestions, statistics, graphs, etc. which will tend to energy saving. This device uses concept of IOT (Internet of Things) i.e. connecting the devices to the internet and transferring data collected by them to storage server. The user can then read and decide his actions and act accordingly. The aim of this paper is to help user to monitor the electricity consumed by its device and if the device is malfunctioning it will ultimately consume large amount of energy, and this can be detected and user would be informed about the malfunctioning of the device.

An IoT based patient monitoring system using raspberry Pi

IoT based intelligent system for fault detection and diagnosis in domestic appliances

Abstract:
Domestic appliances normally used on daily basis are gradually transitioning into the third internet wave, the internet of things. Usually, the end user is the only qualified actor to identify poor performance of these appliances. Moreover, such bad performance only comes to attention in extreme cases, when the appliance is not functioning anymore. This work describes an intelligent, low cost system, which monitors the behavior of electrical magnitudes of domestic appliances in real time. The system is able to analyze the collected data, detect possible faults, and report this situation to the user. An IoT device, designed to be adapted to any old generation consumer electronic device, is part of the proposed system. The complete system is able to identify instant faults, as well as, predict the need for preventive maintenance. The user interface makes use of digital TV, mobile devices, or conventional computers to warn householders about necessary interventions.

A Public Transport Bus as a Flexible Mobile Smart Environment Sensing Platform for IoT

Abstract:
In this paper we present the requirements, design and pre-deployment testing of a transportation bus as a Mobile Enterprise Sensor Bus (M-ESB) service in China that supports two main requirements: to monitor the urban physical environment, and to monitor road conditions. Although, several such projects have been proposed previously, integrating both environment and road condition monitoring and using a data exchange interface to feed a data cloud computing system, is a novel approach. We present the architecture for M-ESB and in addition propose a new management model for the bus company to act as a Virtual Mobile Service Operator. Pre-deployment testing was undertaken to validate our system.

Non-invasive fetus heart rate and growth measurement with abnormality detection using IoT

Abstract:
Infant mortality is an important area of study in both medical research and engineering perspective. For mitigating the miserable conditions of infant mortality, we are proposing a methodology that could help the pregnant women to check her vital medical status and for her fetus on her own without having much effort. To do so we believe that with help of advances in networking and computing, and android mobile application which is built as a support, we would be able to match the detected heart rate of user with database which we create from readings obtained from the maternity centers. The database would include the normal and abnormal fetus heart rate in maternal period ranging from 5th week to last week of pregnancy. A pattern matching is performed with the data between user and database, if a match is detected then suitable message is generated. If any pattern other than normal pattern is received, an alert is generated along with the sending of obtained packets to the doctor for further diagnosis. To compute the abnormality of fetus heart rate during maternal period in user's handheld devices like Smartphone there is no need for separate infrastructure for monitoring mother and fetus. We use a Bluetooth module in order to transfer the vital parameters like pulse rate, fetal heart rate and blood pressure to the user's handheld devices. Thus, detection of abnormality in early stage will make sure that healthcare is reached in time and the newborn would not be affected. This user friendly arrangement drastically reduces the stress for the mother as a portable health check up is available to her.

Smart security solution for women based on Internet Of Things(IOT)

Abstract:
Today in the current global scenario, the prime question in every girl's mind, considering the ever rising increase of issues on women harassment in recent past is mostly about her safety and security. The only thought haunting every girl is when they will be able to move freely on the streets even in odd hours without worrying about their security. This paper suggests a new perspective to use technology for women safety. “848 Indian Women Are Harassed, Raped, Killed Every Day!!” That's a way beyond HUGE number! We propose an idea which changes the way everyone thinks about women safety. A day when media broadcasts more of women's achievements rather than harassment, it's a feat achieved! Since we (humans) can't respond aptly in critical situations, the need for a device which automatically senses and rescues the victim is the venture of our idea in this paper. We propose to have a device which is the integration of multiple devices, hardware comprises of a wearable “Smart band” which continuously communicates with Smart phone that has access to the internet. The application is programmed and loaded with all the required data which includes Human behavior and reactions to different situations like anger, fear and anxiety. This generates a signal which is transmitted to the smart phone. The software or application has access to GPS and Messaging services which is pre-programmed in such a way that whenever it receives emergency signal, it can send help request along with the location co-ordinates to the nearest Police station, relatives and the people in the near radius who have application. This action enables help instantaneously from the Police as well as Public in the near radius who can reach the victim with great accuracy.

IOT-BEAT: An intelligent nurse for the cardiac patient

Abstract:
Cardio-vascular diseases (CVD) are rapidly increasing in the urban lifestyle. CVDs rank #1 in the world when it comes to diseases causing deaths. More people die annually from CVDs than from any other cause. Around 17 million people died from CVDs in the year 2012, representing 31% of all global deaths. In India alone there are around 64 million cardiac patients and only 4000 cardiologists available. Arrhythmia is the most frequent occurring CVD. Patients having Arrhythmia require continuous monitoring so that the doctor can study the abnormality in their heart beats to gain further insights and suggest treatments. In some cases Arrhythmia can be fatal and might need immediate hospitalization. For this purpose, we have developed a system that remotely acquires ECG sensor readings (taken from MIT-BIH database) of the patient, processes it to predict arrhythmia intelligently and sends the indication alarm immediately to the doctor, when an Arrhythmia episode is detected. Also a report of the patient's heart behavior is generated and fetched to the doctor on his smart phone. Our system aims at spreading cardiac care to urban as well as rural places by enabling the remote monitoring the ECG signals of the afflicted cardiac patients and alerting the doctor in case of emergencies

Abstract:
In recent years, there has been a huge growth in the world of intelligent devices for home automation. Such gadgets are designed in order to ease the interaction between people and daily home duties. Although individually they are simple to work with, each appliance has its own configuration interface which adds overhead to the general user experience. This paper presents a solution for connecting more devices into a signal entity which can be easily accessed at any time. The implementation integrates the functionalities of different home automation devices into a single application.

IoT based urban climate monitoring using Raspberry Pi

Abstract:
Internet of Things is the web of physical objects that contain the embedded technology which is helping to develop man to machine or machine to machine communication. This paper mainly propounds a stand-alone system which is providing a dynamic datasheet about the parameters of the city environment. The system is using low cost low power ARM based minicomputer that is Raspberry Pi. It can communicate through Local Area Network (LAN) or the external Wi-Fi module. Commands from user are processed at the Raspberry Pi using Python language. The data can be monitored with other terminal devices like Laptop, Smart Phone and Tablet which is endowed with the internet facility. This framework is giving access to real-time information about an urban environment which includes the parameters: temperature, humidity, pressure, CO and harmful air pollutants.

An IoT framework for intelligent vehicle monitoring system

Abstract:
In order to have safe vehicular traffic across the expressway a real-time monitoring has become a vital need for the today's intelligent traffic monitoring systems(ITS). In this paper we present a design and development of low cost and reliable Internet of things framework which consists of an array of RFID sensors for the real time tracking of the vehicle on its transit from one point to other point of the high speed expressway. The uniquely detecting capability of vehicle using RFID sensor network makes it a better choice compared to the image processing based systems. In this project a real-time stamps are taken from the array of RFID sensor network and the velocity of the vehicle is approximated in the real-time environment using Euler's algorithms. Here an Arduino platform with an Ethernet connection can be used as a core controller and the resultant data can be viewed on the internet using cloud computing.

Implementation of intelligent home appliances based on IoT

Abstract:
The intelligence for home appliances becomes more and more necessary in recent years. It can be developed based on the techniques from intelligent surveillance systems, and integrated with video sensor. In this paper, we propose an implementation of intelligent home appliances. This system typically involves several tasks including foreground detection, noise reduction, object labeling, object recognition and wireless transmission. To realize it on IoT (internet of things) era, we use the transmission device with Bluetooth 4.0 protocol. As a result we will receive the signal on mobile device applications if some dangerous situations is happened. We implement the whole system on embedded system to make a demonstration result. This system will help us to take care of our children prevent from danger appliances and inform the danger situation immediately.

Architecture exploration of multi-source energy harvester for IoT nodes

Wireless sensor networks are constrained by their energy supply. In order to relief this constraint, scavenging ambient energy from the environment has been considered. However, most existing energy harvesting devices rely on a single energy source, potentially reducing the sensor reliability. In this paper, we present an architecture for multi-source energy harvesting, aimed at low cost and easy integration with existing wireless sensors. Unlike existing architectures, our solution relies on a single power conditioning block. This block is powered by multiple sources, selected through a switch matrix by a dedicated controller. A prototype has been developed, validated and compared with alternative architectures. First results show our architecture benefits for systems using many heterogeneous sources, and highlights improvement possibilities through the addition of MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) circuitry.

Early detection of grapes diseases using machine learning and IoT

Grape cultivation has social and economic importance in India. In India, Maharashtra ranks first in grapes production. Over the last few years the quality of grapes has degraded because of many reasons. One of the important causes is diseases on grapes. To prevent diseases farmers spray huge amount of pesticides, which result in increasing the cost of production. Also farmers are unable to identify the diseases manually. The diseases are identified only after the infection, but its takes up a lot of time and have adverse effects on vineyard. The proposed work is to develop a monitoring system which will identify the chances of grape diseases in its early stages by using Hidden Markov Model provides alerts via SMS to the farmer and the expert. The system includes temperature, relative humidity, moisture, leaf wetness sensor and Zig-Bee for wireless data transmission.

An ARM-compliant IoT platform: Security by design for the smart home

Abstract:
IoT heterogeneity and diversity have promoted the creation of different and isolated IoT systems. The EU has funded several research projects in order to promote interoperability and quality aspects for IoT platforms. More significantly, the IoT-ARM was conceived as a reference architecture to derive concrete IoT platforms and establish a common understanding on quality requirements between different platforms. This paper describes SMARTIE, an IoT platform that is compliant with the IoT-ARM and promotes the most important quality aspects for the Smart Home, that is, security and interoperability.

An IOT-based system to prevent injuries in assembly line production systems

Abstract:
Smart Objects (SOs) are products that can exchange information about themselves and the environment due to IOT (Internet of Things) technologies. SOs use IOT technologies for increasing features of traditional objects by communicating and sharing knowledge with the environment. Few pilot applications are currently developed for preventing accidents at workplace. In this study, a preliminary analysis about potentialities of these technologies for preventing accidents at workplace. Next, a prototype solution designed to prevent injuries at semi-automatic assembly line systems is described in detail.

A Study on the Implementation of Intelligent Navigational Risk Assessment System with IoT Sensor

Recent maritime trading volume has been growing continuously and being activated marine leisure market. The government has to control the sea traffic volume through the facility operations such as maritime traffic centers. But more complex marine traffic situation in these trends, according to trend are marine accidents continue to occur. Marine accidents have a difficult characteristic to recover when if suffered environmental and human damage. There is also a trend, scale of the accident has been increased in size. High-risk vessels (such as Cruise ships, Tankers) are required monitoring and analysis of the detailed situation than the general ship. There have been a variety of research in order to solve the problem. However, the data elements are reflected in the shore with the current maritime are only limited information about AIS, Radar information. We are implementing IoT sensor interfacing system capable of transmitting various ship sensing data to the shore-side system and also proposing a Safe Navigation Status Analysis System utilizing the collected data.

Development of an IoT-based visitor detection system

n this paper, we proposed an IoT-based visitor detection system. It uses an IR sensor to detect human body and two ultrasonic sensors to locate visitor servo motor under the position. When a visitor is detected it drives camera module to locate the visitor. Recoded video and sensor data are stored in the Database. Saved data can see via the PC and Smart device. We developed the system using Raspberry Pi2 and sensor modules to verify the concept. It can track the visitor moving route and minimize the blind spots of the camera. And sensor data and recoded video are checked internet possible all remote location.

Development of a wearable tele-monitoring system with IoT for bio-medical applications

Abstract:
The system was developed for remote care-taking applications which could be incorporated for patients. This system has utilised as a sensor integrated shoe and a waist belt. The foot pressures of the foot sole vital points are being measured along with the additional contribution from inertial measurement units. The measured data is being transmitted to a remote Internet of Thing (IOT) for further analysis and stored data in the (IOT) cloud would be available for future medical researchers. The system furthermore comprises activity and location tracking and fall detection system. Concerning the caretaker's convenience, an Android application has also developed.

Low-power multi-sensor system with normally-off sensing technology for IoT applications

Abstract:
We propose the low-power multi-sensor system with normally-off sensing technology for IoT applications, which achieves almost zero standby power at the no-operation modes. A hierarchical power management scheme with activity localization can be reduced the number of transitions between power-on and power-off modes with re-scheduling and bundling task procedures. We also propose autonomously standby mode transition control by selecting optimum standby mode of microcontrollers, reducing total power consumption in the multisensor network. The prototyping evaluation boards with sensors are developed and demonstrated, observing 91% power reductions by adopting the proposed power gating and autonomously standby mode transition control.

combining smart glasses and consumer-grade EEG/EMG headsets for controlling IoT appliances

Abstract:
The number of smart home appliances that can be connected to the Internet grows every day. In this paper, we explore the potential of combining two emerging head-mounted interaction devices for intuitive control of these devices. Smart glasses are used to detect the object the user wants to control, and an EEG/EMG headset is used for triggering commands to the object of interest. We discuss the research and implementation challenges of identifying devices having the users visual attention and of mapping EEG/EMG headset output to device instructions. By exploiting the user context, we improve the responsiveness and precision of the user intent detection. Despite the enthusiastic reactions of the participants in a small user study, we have learned that the consumer-grade headsets available today present many shortcomings.

IoT based automatic storing and retrieval system

Abstract:
Automation has gained the most famous and biggest attention in the industrial world lately. This is because it causes less man involvement, higher accuracy, money and time savings, unlike the conventional methods. Thus, the “Internet of Things” (IoT) concept came to the picture. This research paper reveals an implementing method of IoT concept for a manufacturing line to inspect and control an automatic storing and retrieval system (ASRS) with powerful features. Remote system controlling, Data processing and Record keeping are some of them. The system is synced to an online cloud database and it stores every action done by ASRS. Also the system is capable of categorizing the products into specific order. This is useful for production floors which has more than one product in a production line. Moreover, anyone can view the processes and the history of the system through a user interface. The simple and animated user interfaces are designed for personal computers and for android devices. The simplicity of the concept makes the system speed and it consumes minimum resources. Simply, the automatic product storing and retrieval system can be viewed and controlled from anywhere in the world. A prototype application system is developed to verify the proposed method in this research paper. This paper suggests very flexible cloud based ASRS system.

Along with the breakthrough of the Internet of Things, a new city concept has attracted the attention of researchers, businesses and governments; it is the concept of Smart Cities. The purpose of this article is to present an IoT-based System for Smart Cities, called SIGINURB. The purpose of this System is to develop a range of applications that offers new services to students, employees, businesses and public administration in the University of São Paulo, raising their quality of life.

Design and Implementation of Meal Information Collection System Using IoT Wireless Tags

Abstract:
In recent years, people with lifestyle-related diseases are increasing, because of lack of exercise, overeating, stress and smoking. With this situation, applications of Personal Computer (PC) or smart phone which support healthy life are widespread. Turning to the system dealing with meal information, there are two type systems. One is that meal records are inputted by hand and managed as meal logs. Another one is that a meal image is shot by a smart phone, and meal contents are recorded by image recognition. However, these systems need a lot of time for inputting of meal contents or shooting of meal images. Therefore, it is difficult to continue use. Moreover, the second system has a problem for accuracy of image recognition. In this paper, to solve these problems, we propose a meal information collection system which uses IoT wireless tags. An IoT wireless tag is corresponded to a meal and the system can automatically get meal information such as meal contents, meal sequence, meal time and so on. We implemented the meal information collection system which aims automatic collection and getting of various information which do not get at other systems. From the evaluation results of collection accuracy and comparison with conventional systems, we verified effectiveness of the proposed system.

IoT-based fall detection system with energy efficient sensor nodes

Abstract:
Fall needs to be attentively considered due to its highly frequent occurrence especially with old people — up to one third of 65 and above year-old people around the world are risk of being injured due to falling. Furthermore, fall is a direct or indirect factor causing severe traumas such as brain injuries or bone fractures. However, timely medical attention might help to avoid serious consequences from a fall. A viable solution to solve this is an IoT-based system which takes advantage of wireless sensor networks, wearable devices, Fog and Cloud computing. To deliver sufficient degree of reliability, wearable devices working at the core of a fall detection system, are required to work for prolonged period of time. In this paper we investigate energy consumption of sensor nodes in an IoT-based fall detection system and present a design of a customized sensor node. In addition, we compare the customized sensor node with other sensor nodes, built on general purpose development boards. The results show that sensor nodes based on delicate customized devices are more energy efficient than the others based on general purpose devices while considering identical specification of micro-controller and memory capacity. Furthermore, our customized sensor node with energy efficiency selections can operate continuously up to 35 hours.

IoT fall detection system for the elderly using Intel Galileo development boards generation I

Abstract:
In today society there has been an increase in the number of elderly people that can fend for themselves. However, there are certain risks related to age such as falls, blood pressure or heart problems among others, that can result in serious consequences to the person. The objective of this study is the development of a system oriented IoT, which can be acquired by the low income population, allowing any member of the family to do a remote following up. One of the most serious problems is the falls. For this reason we started developing a module that can detect falls by using accelerometers and gyroscopes in this first stage, as a part of the daily elderly control integral system using the “Intel Galileo Gen I” development board. Selection criteria of the sensors used for this purpose together with corrections reading and data processing are described, because working with a sensor MPU6050 with Intel Galileo Gen I differs respect to other platforms. An analysis on different fall detection algorithms is done; false positives are discarded applying notifications alarms thus acquiring trustworthy data for their processing.

IoT-based surveillance system for ubiquitous healthcare

Abstract:
The last few years, significant advances which improve healthcare have been done in Internet of Things, in cloud computing, in video coding, and in mobile devices. This paper provides an overview of these advances. Also, we propose an IoT-based surveillance system for ubiquitous healthcare monitoring. The system consists of sensors, actuators, and cameras. Mesh topology was decided to be used as it provides important advantages. Moreover, the Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) is used for the data compression and transferring, and the Scalable High-Efficiency Video Coding (SHVC) is used for the video compression and transferring. The SHVC can deliver the same video quality in half of the bit rate than the High-Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). Furthermore, cloud services are provided, such as storage and real-time monitoring. Finally, we made a comparative analysis between our proposed system architecture and two other approaches. From this analysis, we can say that our system architecture has some benefits instead of other similar architectures. Also, we made an analysis of the bandwidth and the network throughput. The results are significant since the bandwidth required for the transmission of data and video is reduced.

IoT Application for the Urban Traffic of Vehicles, Based on WSN Using GSM Technology

Abstract:
Congestion of vehicular traffic in the cities with the highest population density results into a high amount of accidents and also to imminent road violence above average. Facing this problem, our study intends to implement a low-cost Internet of Thing proposal, in order to monitor and analyze traffic circulation and provide solutions to reduce the above mentioned negative effects. To fulfill such proposal, a system of low-cost wireless monitoring has been designed and developed, which is supported on a distributed multilayer model. This system interacts with a device consisting of two electronic Arduino platforms, which themselves interact in master-slave mode having a distance sensor based on laser for detection of vehicles. The latter has the ability to connect to the Internet transmitting in real-time data taken by HTTP requests over the cellular network. On the data collected an engine for data mining is mounted in order to receive information about the traffic on highways and subsequently proposing potential solutions. The proof of concept has been applied in the city of Quito. There, on over their two central lanes of the Simon Bolivar Avenue such kind of solutions have been applied with positive results, both in the operation of the software and hardware that compose the prototype, as well as in reference measurements of traffic. Based on our findings, the system manages to suggest extrapolations, which enables to reduce traffic congestion, fuel waste, and also air pollution.

IoT based waste collection system using infrared sensors

Abstract:
Waste collection and transportation, is the most costly stage in a waste management program. In this paper, commonly used solutions to improve waste collection systems have been discussed and an IoT based methodology has been proposed as a new solution. The methodology proposes use of Infrared sensors to gather real time data from the waste bins and that of Raspberry Pi2Development Board to communicate this information to the waste managers. The waste managers can effectively use this information to optimize the scheduling and routing of collection process.

An Integrated IoT Architecture for Smart Metering

They are a fundamental part of keeping the city connected and informed, and ensure that each subsystem performs its function. The integration of information technology helps to control the subsystems that form the smart city. Implementation of IoT (Internet of Things) and Image processing in smart agriculture

Abstract:
Internet of Things and Image processing have been so far been applied for various applications independently. Their individual application in the field of agriculture exists and has achieved certain degree of success, however the combination of both these technology so far is non-existent. This paper describes an approach to combine IoT and image processing in order to determine the environmental factor or man-made factor (pesticides/fertilizers) which is specifically hindering the growth of the plant. Using an IoT sensing network which takes the readings of the crucial environmental factors and the image of the leaf lattice, it is processed under MATLAB software by the help of histogram analysis to arrive at conclusive results.

Residential demand response system framework leveraging IoT devices

Abstract:
While large-scale residential demand response (DR) has been considered promising because of the significant flexibility for controlling electricity demand, customer acquisition and engagement are the major barriers hindering its penetration. To overcome the challenges, we propose a comprehensive DR system framework both for utilities to support multiple DR programs and a wide range of controllable resources, i.e., a variety of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, in residential households and for customers to enjoy two-way, timely communication with utility companies and centralized control over heterogeneous IoT devices in their households (i.e., smart appliances), which facilitates their DR participation. As the key enabler of these advantages, we propose the use of mobile app DR client. Pilot-ready prototypes of the mobile app and DR server are demonstrated and evaluated.

This paper describes the outcomes of a one year long research project aimed at identifying and prototyping ideas for Internet of Things-based products which can help parents with ADHD or autism in their everyday life. The project was conducted according to user-centered design principles to identify ideas, which were later prototyped and made technical proof-of-concepts of. Our paper describes the concept and architecture of a system which is able to monitor the body's vital signs, pre-process the data, generate emergency alerts and use the power of cloud machine learning to predict medical states.

IoT enabled aquatic drone for environmental monitoring

Abstract:
The article describes a monitoring system based on Raspberry Pi platform and a multichannel sensing module associated with water quality and air quality measurement parameters. Thus the temperature, conductivity, relative humidity and gas concentration are measured as was as the underwater acoustic signals. The data is stored on the memory of the drone's computational platform, and synchronized with a remote server database. Advanced data processing algorithms were implemented on the server side. Additionally, a mobile application was developed to be used by people working in the field for data visualization and statistical analysis.

A Secure IoT-based Healthcare System with Body Sensor Networks

Abstract:
The ever-increasing advancement in communication technologies of modern smart objects brings with it a new era of application development for IoT (Internet of Things) based networks. In particular, owing to the contactless-ness nature and efficiency of data retrieval of mobile smart objects, such as wearable equipment or tailored bio-sensors, several innovative types of healthcare systems with body sensor networks (BSN) have been proposed. In this paper, we introduce a secure IoT-based healthcare system which operates through BSN architecture. To simultaneously achieve system efficiency and robustness of transmission within public IoT-based communication networks, we utilize robust crypto-primitives to construct two communication mechanisms for ensuring transmission confidentiality and providing entity authentication among smart objects, the local processing unit and the backend BSN server. Moreover, we realize the implementation of the proposed healthcare system with the Raspberry PI platform to demonstrate the practicability and feasibility of the presented mechanisms.

An IoT approach to vehicle accident detection, reporting, and navigation

Abstract:
One particular concern that Public Safety Organizations (PSO) must account for whilst engaging in many activities is decreasing the effect of vehicle accidents, aiding as many injured people as possible and providing 24/7 on the spot rescue. The Red Cross humanitarian organization is one of the most known PSOs to be present on-site whenever an accident or a disaster takes place. However, some of the rescue teams face difficulty in reaching the injured people to due late alerts and insufficient information of the specific accident location. The advent of the mobile phone and Internet of Things (IoT) industries reshaped the way people communicate and brought a paradigm shift to public and private services [1]. This ever-evolving technology marked the beginning of new era affecting the lives of people and various businesses. This paper conveys a smart and reliable IoT system solution which instantly notifies the PSO headquarter whenever an accident takes place and pinpoints its geographic coordinates on the map. When an accident takes place, a shock sensor detects it. Then, an algorithm is applied to process the sensor signal and send the geographic location along with some ancillary information to the PSO headquarter, indicating accident occurrence. This is a promising system expected to aid in the tedious rescuing process by reporting in a matter of seconds the location of an accident, the passengers injured, blood types, thus lowering death's rates. The geographical data collected from this system could be relied upon as admissible evidence or indicator of the road state and conditions

Design and Implementation of a smart chair system for IoT

Abstract:
We present the design and implementation of a Smart IoT Chair system for Internet of Things (IoT) that combines an embedded IoT device and a chair with separated seating pads. The proposed Smart IoT Chair records and visualizes user's posture through a smartphone application to help the users correct their unbalanced posture. It uses custom designed sensors for pressure and tilt sensing, and also uses iBeacon and Bluetooth communication to transmit data with low-power consumption. We implemented a prototype of Smart IoT chair combining six custom sensors, an Arduino, a Bluetooth module and a chair. Preliminary results show that our Smart IoT Chair combined with our case-study smartphone application can accurately detect various user postures.

Remote management of intelligent devices: Using TR-069 protocol in IoT

Abstract:
The aggressive expansion of emerging smart devices connected to the Internet infrastructure is nowadays considered as one of the most challenging components of the Internet of Things (IoT) vision. As a particular segment of IoT, the smart home gateways, also named Machine-Type Communication Gateway (MTCG), become an important direction for industry including telecommunication operators. In most cases, the MTCG acts as a bridge between connected smart objects and the public network (Internet). As a consequence of the IoT domain expansion, the separate configuration of each individual Machine-to-Machine (M2M) device is not feasible anymore due to steadily growing numbers of M2M nodes. To perform this task, several novel technologies have recently been introduced. However, legacy protocols and mechanisms for remote network management still retain a certain application potential for IoT. Accordingly, we have investigated the well-known protocol TR-069 with a particular focus on its usability for MTCG. To this end, the software module (bundle) based on the TR-069 for remote configuration and management of MTCG, as well as for controlling the end smart devices, has been developed. We believe that our implementation (available as open source on GitHub) can serve as an important building block for efficient management of future IoT devices. Therefore, TR-069 protocol constitutes a proven and standardized technology and could be easily deployed by most of the network and service providers today.

Remote health monitoring system through IoT

Abstract:
Remote health caring of patients at home is increasing with the popularity of various nature of mobile devices that has developed to enable remotely caring. The cloud as well as IoT (Internet of Things) and the mobile technologies make it easier to monitor the patients health conditions by sharing the health information to health care teams such as doctors, nurses and specialists. However the guardians of the patients can be anxious about their patients when they are in work. By ensuring guidance awareness about the patients, it can bring more liability of the hospital management. We have demonstrated a health care system for hospital management to allow guardians along with doctors to remotely monitor health conditions of patients via internet. Remote monitoring and guidance awareness by sharing information in a authenticated manner are the main focus.

Architectural framework of smart water meter reading system in IoT environment

Abstract:
Internet of Things (IoT) has provided promising opportunities to create powerful industrial and domestic applications. One of its main applications is smart metering. Water is the most precious resource that must be used responsibly. Information about the usage of water can reduce the water wastage and will help in water management. In this paper we propose the architectural framework for IoT based water meter. Water flow and heat measurements are taken by water meter (STUF-280T) which is based on ultrasonic flow measurement technology. We have described the Mediatek Cloud Sandbox which we are using as a cloud platform. For water meter to communicate with the cloud we have used LinkIt ONE development board which is an open source platform for prototyping IoT devices. As data will be stored and analyzed on the cloud, this system will be very economical. Also user can access, analyze and share data anytime, from anywhere.

Home automation and grid mapping technology using IoT

Abstract:
Internet of Things (IoT) has stood at the forefront of technological advancements in order to reduce human labor. The idea of making the world smart arises from the fact that “things” can be connected via/to the Internet. Smart homes, smart cars, smart offices all these have brought about a massive change in the field of technology. The use of sensors in common household items can transform them into smarter devices is the next step. Grid based mapping is an easy way to map an entire house. Control of electronic devices through mobile phones or computers is at the core of this technology. This paper discusses how home automation system can be implemented and how the use of cloud computing technology along with IoT devices can be used so that the data collected by these devices can be safely stored and monitored.

An efficient data collection and dissemination for IOT based WSN

Abstract:
Data collection issues play a significant role in the area of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) and Internet of Things (IOT). Energy efficiency is affected by the number of data transmissions from the node to the Sink / base station (BS). Control of the update data is one of the feasible ways to reduce the messages sent by the nodes. In transmitting data strategies most of the WSN real-time data applications update the data directly, and some current study made a logical or absolute check to measure the change between the current and last sensor measuring value before updating the data. In this paper, we proposed a method to reduce the number of data transmissions as well as decrease the amount of data that will result in prolonging the lifetime of the network. The proposed method aims to reduce the number of transmitted messages via a node supporting single and multiple sensors based on the relative change or relative differences between the current and last sensor measured values transmitted. The results show the proposed method appears to deliver the best performance in terms of reducing the number of messages transitions and packets size, in this study the mean percentage of reducing the number of messages transmissions is 74%, and 80% is the mean percentage reduce of node packet size. From the results, it's clear that reduce the number of packet's transitions and reduce the node packet size, will result in a decrease the energy consumption as well as prolonging the lifetime of the system.

Energy-efficient Data Centers and smart temperature control system with IoT sensing

Abstract:
The population is increasing every day and hence leading to increasing demand of energy consumption. Data center being one of the crucial aspect of IT organisational operations consumes several tens of MW of power. Some facilities consumes power which is 100 times more than a typical office building. One main concern is business continuity and if any single rack of the data center fails then that might result in impairment in company operations which may also stop completely. In this growing demand of energy consumption and huge requirement of power by a data center, we provide a balanced method to run these data centers smoothly without any interruption. In this paper we propose an energy efficient method to meet the power requirement for these gigantic power consuming data centers as well as techniques of efficient air conditioning system to reduce power consumption. The Data Center air conditioning system include environment monitoring, air conditioning, ventilation and temperature control. The algorithm to monitor and control temperature changes is provided and its implementation is also discussed below. Here we have discussed how the power consumption can be significantly reduced without compromising with the cooling performance of these data centers.

Enabling IoT for In-Home Rehabilitation: Accelerometer Signals Classification Methods for Activity

Abstract:
Rehabilitation and elderly monitoring for active ageing can benefit from Internet of Things (IoT) capabilities in particular for in-home treatments. In this paper we consider two functions useful for such treatments: Activity Recognition (AR) and Movement Recognition (MR). The former is aimed at detecting if a patient is idle, still, walking, running, going up/down the stairs or cycling; the latter individuates specific movements often required for physical rehabilitation such as arm circles, arm presses, arm twist, curls, seaweed and shoulder rolls. Smartphones are the reference platforms being equipped with an accelerometer sensor and elements of the IoT. The work surveys and compares accelerometer signals classification methods to enable IoT for the aforementioned functions. The considered methods are Support Vector Machines (SVMs), Decision Trees (DTs) and Dynamic Time Warping (DTW). A comparison of the methods has been proposed to highlight their performance: all the techniques have good recognition accuracies and, among them, the SVM-based approaches show an accuracy above 90% in the case of AR and above 99% in the case of MR.

IoT Software Infrastructure for Energy Management and Simulation in Smart Cities

Abstract:
This paper presents an IoT software infrastructure that enables energy management and simulation of new control policies in a city district. The proposed platform enables the interoperability and the correlation of (near-)real-time building energy profiles with environmental data from sensors as well as building and grid models. In a smart city context, this platform fulfills i) the integration of heterogeneous data sources at building and district level, and ii) the simulation of novel energy policies at district level aimed at the optimization of the energy usage accounting also for its impact on building comfort. The platform has been deployed in a real world district and a novel control policy for the heating distribution network has been developed and tested. Results are presented and discussed in the paper.

IoT gateway - implementation proposal based on Arduino board

Internet of Things (IoT) is a new paradigm of connected devices. IoT architecture ensures that devices are connected to each other and able to communicate as and when required. Centre for the Development of Telematics (C-DoT) developed Tower Monitoring Solution (TMS) [1] which monitors status of different sources of power in Telecom Towers. Standard oneM2M is one of the standards of IoT that defines the architecture of connected devices. TMS is now being updated according to oneM2M standard since C-DoT is part of Telecommunications Standards Development Society, India (TSDSI) which is involved in development of oneM2M standard. Under this new architecture, bidirectional connection is required to send data and alarm notification from centralized server/gateway to TMS devices. However, in GSM-GPRS SIM based devices, IP address of the device changes every time they are connected to the network, so the server is not aware of the current device IP address and cannot send data to the device. Also, in our oneM2M network, devices of different capabilities are connected, so a single approach does not work for all the devices. In this paper we have discussed about different methods which can be used by GSM-GPRS devices & devices of different capabilities to establish two way communication with centralized server. In this paper we have proposed an algorithm based solution for this challenge. This is innovative algorithmic solution that enables low cost devices to be operated centrally eliminating the need to replace those devices with high end device

Monitoring ambient light conditions of a school using IoT

Abstract:
Internet of Things (IoT) is a concept that connects real world physical objects to the Internet. Each object is given a unique identity to digitally identify it all across the Internet. Each object has sensing and communication capabilities by which it collects information and forwards the collected information to the Internet. Objects also communicate among themselves to perform a common goal by means of Internet protocols. In this paper, an application of IoT that helps in monitoring and maintaining the ambience light of a classroom is discussed.

Design of IoT-based energy efficiency management system for building ceramics production line

Abstract:
This paper analyses the current situation of Chinese building ceramics production lines. For most of the current production lines, the overall equipment efficiency is low, resulting in low production and inefficient usage of energy. Moreover, the traditional manual meter reading in most of the production lines is consuming and it is hard to judge whether the data stored in the database is accurate or not. On the other hand, this paper analyses the development of the Internet of Things (IoT) and proposes an Energy Efficiency Management System (EEMS) for building ceramics production line based on IoT. The required relevant technologies including cloud computing, MQ Telemetry Transport (MQTT), Tornado and RESTful API, are introduced. At the end of the paper, the design of EEMS is presented. Built on the cloud computing centre, the EEMS, with Role-based Access Control (RBAC) and the database interface RESTful API, collects equipment data using MQTT protocol, implements the Tornado web server framework to provide web services and uses web front-end technologies including HTML, CSS and JAVASCRIPT to build web applications. The implement of proposed system can effectively improve the energy efficiency of production lines and the competitiveness of building ceramics enterprises.

Battery Voltage Supervisors for Miniature IoT Systems

Abstract:
As battery size decreases due to system size constraints in miniature Internet-of-things systems, the internal resistance of the battery increases, resulting in a large IR drop on the battery voltage, complicating battery supervising functions. In this paper, we discuss low-power battery voltage supervisors (BVSs) that are capable of handling this increased IR drop. Battery voltage, battery internal resistance, required threshold voltages, and power-on-reset delay are discussed. As examples, two low-power BVSs fabricated in a 180 nm CMOS process are described.

ubiMeter: A proposal for remote instrumentation in IoT

Abstract:
Modern instrumentation systems must typically deal with challenges such as remote access, device heterogeneity and automated configuration. IoT infrastructures can be useful in this scenario because the technologies used in IoT environments can also be used to cope with the cited difficulties. In this paper, we present a remote measurement instrument whose design prioritizes integration with an ubiquitous computing middleware, exploring the convergence between instrumentation and IoT. In particular, the instrument, which is called ubiMeter, uses the context awareness features of the EXEHDA middleware. Its capabilities were evaluated in two different case studies, which yielded promising results.

A smart low-consumption IoT framework for location tracking and its real application

Abstract:
Location-based services are increasingly popular. Smart devices embedded with GPS receiver are widely used in vehicle tracking, law enforcement and person monitoring. To provide real-time data collecting and analyzing, a backend server is necessary. A mobile app can work as a user client for accessing location data and remote control. In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of a system providing real-time positioning and tracking service. Our system consists of three parts: tracking device, backend server and mobile app. Our tracking device integrates GPS module, GSM/GPRS module and TCP/IP stack, capable of generating location data, establishing TCP connection and receiving SMS. Location data are transmitted over TCP connection from device to our backend server. The server is responsible for collecting and storing data. The server also provides an HTTP-based RESTful API for mobile app and web service. A mobile app is built for displaying data and controlling device remotely. Data accessing is via calling REST API and remote control is sent to device by SMS. Our device is compact in volume, accurate in positioning, and long in battery life. Our device has been integrated in a walking stick as a real-world product.

IoT-aware online shopping system enhanced with gaze analysis

Abstract:
In online business, it is important to construct sale web pages offering attractive services for popular products in order to improve page access as well as purchase rates. Moreover, online shop owners need to hold various types of (campaign) sales frequently throughout the year to keep customers coming back. Also, online shopping systems have to adapt to its circumstances such as customers' needs and the surrounding economic situations. To cope with these requirements, a self-organized IoT (Internet of Things) aware systems is proposed for online shopping. In our approach, awareness is achieved by monitoring/analyzing the data of user's behavior, in particular the eye gaze. The particular focus here is the analysis of the users' eye gaze with the objective to derive insights about products the user is interested in or not and adapt the system accordingly by presenting other products with similar attributes, hiding products with less interesting attributes and building a user's interest model by integrating all the positive preferences.

Low-cost, Long-range open IoT for smarter rural African villages

Abstract:
Recent long-range radio technologies are promising to deploy Low Power WAN at a very low-cost for a large variety of IoT applications. However, even though, there are several issues that need to be addressed when considering deploying IoT solutions for low-income developing countries. In this article, we first explain these issues and show how they can be addressed in the context of rural sub-saharan African applications, one of them being smarter villages and farms in a small and micro deployment model. We then describe our low-cost, long-range IoT framework which takes cost of hardware and services as the main challenge to be addressed as well as flexibility, quick appropriation and customization by third parties.

IoT based smart parking system

Abstract:
In recent times the concept of smart cities have gained grate popularity. Thanks to the evolution of Internet of things the idea of smart city now seems to be achievable. Consistent efforts are being made in the field of IoT in order to maximize the productivity and reliability of urban infrastructure. Problems such as, traffic congestion, limited car parking facilities and road safety are being addressed by IoT. In this paper, we present an IoT based cloud integrated smart parking system. The proposed Smart Parking system consists of an on-site deployment of an IoT module that is used to monitor and signalize the state of availability of each single parking space. A mobile application is also provided that allows an end user to check the availability of parking space and book a parking slot accordingly. The paper also describes a high-level view of the system architecture. Towards the end, the paper discusses the working of the system in form of a use case that proves the correctness of the proposed model.

Design of disaster management system using IoT based interconnected network

Abstract:
IoT deals with intricate systems that integrate multiple disperse components towards their synergetic use. In this paper a system of interconnected smart modules is developed as a way to enable centralized data acquisition as well as provide an interlinked network for transmission of data in absence of any existing infrastructure. Emphasis is given on how sensing and communication technologies of IoT can effectively be used in smart city monitoring as well as in case of disaster management. The hardware of the module used for this purpose is studied and elaborated in a detailed manner

IoT based data processing for automated industrial meter reader using Raspberry Pi

Abstract:
With the increasing importance of information processing in industries arises the need for efficient data logging systems that are compatible with existing measuring devices such as LCD and LED meters. This paper presents the framework for an Internet of Things (IoT) device as an automated industrial meter reader that uploads the collected numeral data to a cloud storage for centralized data processing. The implementation of the device is done using Raspberry Pi as the platform. The device follows a four-step process-Image Acquisition using Raspberry Pi camera module, Optical Character Recognition using feature extraction technique, Internet Upload Mechanism using Google Forms and Online Data Processing using Google Spreadsheet. The performance of the device and techniques for debugging are also discussed.

IoT enabled environmental monitoring system for smart cities

Abstract:
A smart city enables the effective utilization of resources and better quality of services to the citizens. To provide services such as air quality management, weather monitoring and automation of homes and buildings in a smart city, the basic parameters are temperature, humidity and CO2. This paper presents a customised design of an Internet of Things (IoT) enabled environment monitoring system to monitor temperature, humidity and CO2. In developed system, data is sent from the transmitter node to the receiver node. The data received at the receiver node is monitored and recorded in an excel sheet in a personal computer (PC) through a Graphical User Interface (GUI), made in LabVIEW. An Android application has also been developed through which data is transferred from LabVIEW to a smartphone, for monitoring data remotely. The results and the performance of the proposed system is discussed.

Smart electricity distribution in residential areas: Internet of Things (IoT)

Abstract:
Energy is the foundation block for any socio economic development. There is a significant disparity in the growth rate of population fuelling a demand for energy and the installed capacity base of energy generation in India. Many countries worldwide, have adopted smart cities and smart metering program to cope up with the pressure of growing population and limited infrastructure with mixed results. The Indian government smart cities program to develop over hundred cities will require efficient power management to ensure uninterrupted power supply to all house hold and commercial establishments. This would require commissioning of smart meters generating petabytes (PB) of data on current readings, pilferage, damage, over current drawn, power factor and prepaid billing among other parameters of interest. This huge flow of data would require a supporting Information Technology infrastructure hosted on anytime-anywhere and highly scalable cloud platform providing storage and immense computing power. The beneficiary of such infrastructure would be the citizens, distribution companies and its analytics would help the policy makers. This paper aims at identifying the current energy developments in India, identify the use of ICT technology including Cloud and Internet of Things being adopted worldwide and finally the authors suggest key technology and power components for a Residential Smart Energy Distribution and lists down innovative analytics which can be derived from these components. Finally it lists down some futuristic suggestions by the authors to improve energy conservation, reduce operational costs and empower the customer with usage analytics.

S-MUnSTa: A smart ventilated insulation system based on IoT protocol stack

Abstract:
Buildings energy efficiency plays a key role in terms of reducing energy consumption and improving the internal comfort. For this purpose, European standards regulate the use of different insulation systems, applied to the internal or external building envelope. However, different studies demonstrate that considerable thicknesses of insulation layers are inappropriate in our Mediterranean climates. This paper presents an innovative dynamic ventilated insulation system able to overcome condensation and overheating phenomena, also exploiting Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. This system, called S-MUnSTa, is a ventilated external layer equipped with valves of insulating material, for opening (in summer) and closing (in winter) the air channel, with the aim to optimize the thermal performance. Moreover, in order to control and manage the valves, a wireless controller system based on IoT technologies has been adopted. The proposed solution, exploiting a photovoltaic system as power source, has been also compared with a wired one alternative. The combination of building and IoT technologies develops an innovative system with several advantages, such as: the improvement of internal comfort and energy saving during the whole year controlled with a wireless system, the ease of installation and the versatile use in walls and roofs in every building typology.

SmartVent: A Context Aware IoT System to Measure Indoor Air Quality and Ventilation Rate

Abstract:
As humans generally spend most of their time indoors, having good indoor air quality and its real time information is critical for maintaining human health and productivity. According to EPA, indoor air even in centrally air-conditioned buildings is several times more polluted than outdoor air, primarily due to change in occupancy pattern, poor, old or ill maintained ventilation systems, dust, and presence of volatile organic compounds. Hence, it is necessary for humans to pervasively and ubiquitously measure air quality information in real time, specially whose health is sensitive to poor indoor air. In this work, we propose a novel context aware Android smart phone based mobile adhoc sensing system that senses various data from indoor environment around the user and analyses it in real time, thereby helping to maintain good health and better work productivity.

Smart IoT system design for after-sales maintenances of 3-phase generators

Abstract:
This manuscript provides a smart IoT system design of monitoring 3-phase generators for the manufacturer to implement product maintenances and after-sales services efficiently. This system consists of a smart control module, a client system and a server system. Based on a power meter SoC, the smart control module can measure and record the power statuses of generators and conduct their ON/OFF remote control. The client system located in customer is an embedded system with the functions of user interface, power data gathering through the smart control module, and internet communication. The statuses of all generators in customers are monitored and recorded into both the client system (customer) and the server system (manufacturer), simultaneously by which the maintenance engineers can implement proactive product maintenances and provide more efficient services. In addition, this system can be applied for the maintenances of other electrical machines

IOT: Intelligent Bio-tank system for smart home

Abstract:
Recently, we can hear from the TV news or read the newspapers in Taiwan that outdoor air pollution is worsen dramatically, and our government warns us that we need to wear masks when going out. Indoor air quality is even worse than that of outdoor environments according to some research report. Worse indoor air quality will affect our health conditions; hence, how to improve the indoor air quality is becoming essential nowadays. In our research, we aim to propose an intelligent Bio-tank, which is an indoor home air quality monitoring and controlling system that is considered as a natural indoor air purifier. That is this system aims at improving the indoor air quality based on its goal.

Design of energy monitoring system based on IOT

Abstract:
This design is an application of enterprise energy monitoring system which is based on IOT. In order to design a remote energy monitoring system based on B/S structure, this application has used many kinds of technologies, such as digital instrumentation, communications networks, software, databases and so on, setting centralized management, decentralized control and remote monitoring as the goals. This remote energy monitoring system which is based on IOT, can not only improve the level of enterprises' energy management, but also plays an important role in energy-saving and emission reduction as well as some other aspects. This energy monitoring system has already conducted a comprehensive test in China Automotive Technology and Research Center, and the results showed that it met the design requirements and achieved real-time monitoring of the devices.

IoT based energy management for residential area

Abstract:
One of the major challenges in today's electric grid is the ability to meet the rising energy demands. This work presents a conceptual model that closes the cycle between the electric utility and residential consumers through defining rules and objectives that govern the behavior of the planning and distribution in the electric grid. Each home appliance, utility server, homeowner, and operator is considered as an object with a unique address. A prototype is implemented and tested to proof the concept.

IoT based smart healthcare kit

Abstract:
The paper presents the design and implementation of an IOT-based health monitoring system for emergency medical services which can demonstrate collection, integration, and interoperation of IoT data flexibly which can provide support to emergency medical services like Intensive Care Units (ICU), using a INTEL GALILEO 2ND generation development board. The proposed model enables users to improve health related risks and reduce healthcare costs by collecting, recording, analyzing and sharing large data streams in real time and efficiently. The idea of this project came so to reduce the headache of patient to visit to doctor every time he need to check his blood pressure, heart beat rate, temperature etc. With the help of this proposal the time of both patients and doctors are saved and doctors can also help in emergency scenario as much as possible. The proposed outcome of the project is to give proper and efficient medical services to patients by connecting and collecting data information through health status monitors which would include patient's heart rate, blood pressure and ECG and sends an emergency alert to patient's doctor with his current status and full medical information.

ECG signal analysis and arrhythmia detection on IoT wearable medical devices

Abstract:
Healthcare is one of the most rapidly expanding application areas of the Internet of Things (IoT) technology. IoT devices can be used to enable remote health monitoring of patients with chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases (CVD). In this paper we develop an algorithm for ECG analysis and classification for heartbeat diagnosis, and implement it on an IoT-based embedded platform. This algorithm is our proposal for a wearable ECG diagnosis device, suitable for 24-hour continuous monitoring of the patient. We use Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) for the ECG analysis, and a Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier. The best classification accuracy achieved is 98.9%, for a feature vector of size 18, and 2493 support vectors. Different implementations of the algorithm on the Galileo board, help demonstrate that the computational cost is such, that the ECG analysis and classification can be performed in real-time.

Monitoring of the medication distribution and the refrigeration temperature in a pharmacy

Abstract:
For the past 15 years since its appearance, Internet of Things (IoT) technology has been leading the planet towards a smart world where all devices and physical objects, referred to as "things", will be connected via electronic sensors through the Internet. The distribution of medication to patients at a pharmacy in certain regions is still very traditional and outdated. Patients wait for a long time in queues to receive their medications, this is mostly due to the absence of an efficient distribution system. Also, the refrigeration temperature within several pharmacies is a huge problem, as medications must be kept at a constant temperature for an optimal results. In this paper we propose a simple and reliable approach to monitor a pharmacy store, the method is based on electronic sensors connected to an Intel Galileo board, to perform a medication search and also to control the refrigeration temperature within pharmacy shelves. The implementation cost of such systems is considerably cheaper than a software based system; this makes such systems appropriate for underprivileged areas. This system was designed and built for a pharmacy but it can be generalized for other purposes.

An energy efficient sensor for thyroid monitoring through the IoT

Abstract:
This paper presents a thyroid monitoring sensor for Internet of Things (IoT) applications. The proposed architecture is energy efficient and user friendly. Thyroid monitoring can be done either by monitoring the basal body temperature or through blood samples. In this work basal body temperature is the quantity sensed for thyroid monitoring. The temperature acquisition is performed by a ring oscillator along with a counter and a controller. The designed module implements the temperature acquisition module along with the calibration method to dynamically optimize the sensor design. A prototype of the temperature sensor along with the controller which performs the calibration is designed using Simulink®.
